Buzz About Crossfit

What is all the fuss about when it comes to Crossfit? There must be something to it.  I mean you don’t just go knocking down walls and remodeling a perfectly fine gym for no big reason, right?

Crossfit is a core strength and conditioning program based on making visible improvements to 10 fitness domains.

  1. Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance
  2. Stamina
  3. Strength
  4. Flexibility
  5. Power
  6. Speed
  7. Coordination
  8. Agility
  9. Balance
  10. and Accuracy

The program is usually done with a group, where the whole group does the same workout (well, workouts are scaled to accommodate people’s different fitness levels). Here’s an example:

10 minutes of Rowing for maximum meters
5 minutes of rest
5 minutes AMRAP (as many reps as possible) of 185lb/135lb back squats

Every workout is different but they all adhere to some basic principles. For one thing, the program uses a selection of hugely functional moves like this well-demonstrated barbell front squat.

We’ll use the rowers, kettlebells, barbells, heavy medicine balls, and even our own bodies. There’s lots of back extension and overhead lifting, as these two moves are indispensable in creating strong healthy bodies. You’ll learn how to get ripped abs (again look at this pic to the left!) without zillions of stomach crunches – seriously.

Another distinguishing feature of Crossfit is that the program is designed for universal scalability, making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. The same routines are being used for old ladies and cage fighters a month out from televised bouts. It’s about scaling the load and intensity; not changing programs. In fact, the variety of motion and constant exposure to new challenges is why the program works! Proven by literally millions of Crossfitters around the globe, this format breeds competitiveness and camaraderie all while getting a great workout! Check out the Crossfit main site for a more thorough description of the program at http://crossfit.com/

While the details of how you can participate in the program at Mountain Fitness Center are still being hashed out, one of the big reasons for the recent changes at the gym is the arrival of Crossfit. It’s a lot to look forward to, for people looking for a sporty alternative to 3 sets of 10 or something more economical than a personal trainer. In fact, the program is like having a personal trainer there all the time, but it’s a lot more economical because the trainer only plans one workout for the day and you’ll be working out with 5, 6, maybe even 8 or 10 others.

Prices will be somewhere in the $7 to $15 range (compared to $30 and up for personal training, it’s a steal!), and we’ll definitely start with just two or three class times. Want more info about this program? Post a comment to this post and we’ll follow up with an email.

And of course, stay tuned here on the blog for more details to emerge about Crossfit at Mountain Fitness Center!

Len, I think you would do better without trying to pace with a group. You’ve got to focus on improving some very specific areas right now that are better handled with a with a pencil than a spray can. The right thing will come along – just keep your eyes open. Ted

Hey Ted. Sign me up when these classes start, definitely interested. Thanks!

    • teddevito says:

Sure thing Tyler. 1st week of November is the plan. What time of day do you exercise? The first two slots we’re opening will be something like 12pm and 4pm – is that a workable option for you? I’d like to get a morning time started but I haven’t organized anything there yet.

      • Tyler Wood says:

I usually hit it early in the morning, 5-7 or so, but I could swing the 4 PM option. I am interested in giving it a go, please let me know when it is set up. Thanks Ted!

    I’m interested!

Ill do crossfit if the guy in the picture is my trainer :-)

    • teddevito says:

Does your boyfriend know about this? (that’s the sound of me dialing him on the phone and telling him we’ll get him how ripped we’re going to make his abs). The guy in the pic, by the way, is Lance Armstrong.
